Navi Mumbai is about to witness a major change in its transport system as the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is finally set to become operational this month.
This will be a great relief to the daily commuters who have been waiting for years for this project to take off. The initial stretch of the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, spanning 11.1 km between Belapur and Pendhar, comprises 11 stations.
Funding and Completion of the Project
CIDCO, the organization behind this project, has confirmed that the funding for the project, which costs ₹3,063.63 crores, is being carried out through surplus internal accruals without any financial assistance.
This is a significant achievement, and Sanjay Mukherjee, vice-chairman and managing director of CIDCO, has announced that “from April, the complete Navi Mumbai Metro Line-1 is scheduled to become operational.”
The Beginning, Delay and Resumption of Work
The Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 project started in May 2011 under the direction of then-Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. However, the work was delayed, and the contract was eventually cancelled. CIDCO took steps to accelerate the project by appointing Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) in February 2021 to finish Line 1’s remaining work for ₹850 crore.
Detailed Project Report for Metro Lines 2 and 3 Approved
CIDCO gave the green light to the detailed project report for Navi Mumbai’s Metro Lines 2 and 3 in 2019. Meanwhile, the DPR for Line 4 is still pending.
The upcoming Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1-A, stretching 7.99 km from CBD Belapur to Navi Mumbai International Airport, is set to receive DPR approval for future implementation. According to Sanjay Mukherjee, the NMM will enhance Navi Mumbai’s internal connectivity, improve public transport, and provide high-quality travel options for residents while also boosting the real estate sector.
The launch of Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is a significant development for the residents of Navi Mumbai, who have been waiting for years for this project to be completed.
CIDCO’s determination and effort have made this project possible, and it is expected to bring positive changes to the city’s transport system and real estate sector.
The launch of the NMM is a welcome move, and it will provide a much-needed mode of transport for the daily commuters of the city.
