BEST Plans to Introduce Water Taxi in Mumbai

Mumbai Water Taxi

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is exploring a new land-and-water taxi service. Such a new concept has been proposed as a response to Mumbai’s escalating road congestion.

The BEST plans to launch 500 app-based AC taxis by June 2023, which will cut pollution and save fuel.

Water Taxi service from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai (Belapur) and Mumbai to Mandwa has already begun. The Mumbai-Navi Mumbai water truck, on the other hand, has been stopped because of an absence of passengers.

However, the Mumbai Cruise Terminal to Mandwa water taxi service has begun, cutting the journey duration from Mumbai to Mandwa to 40 to 45 minutes.

In February 2022, then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the water taxi service to give people additional ways to get around via canal. This has been made accessible by connecting Belapur and JNPT, Elephanta.

A water taxi service connecting Mumbai and Mandwa has begun over six months after being granted approval to run from the Mumbai Cruise Terminal. The Mumbai-Belapur service, on the other hand, drew little interest.

In collaboration with the Maharashtra Maritime Board, the BEST is piloting a water taxi service.

The goal is to create a new choice for passengers that is both environmentally responsible and cost-effective.

The BEST anticipates its findings by March, after which an ultimate ruling on the implementation of the water taxi service would be made.

Once launched, the water taxi would provide a much-needed option to Mumbai’s already clogged highways.

Considering Mumbai’s rising pollution, the idea of generating electricity from land and water has emerged.

This alternative is meant to conserve fuel and minimise pollution while also presenting passengers with a new option.

The analysis of the water taxi service tests is anticipated in March, and a final decision on their implementation will be made.
