BMC Launches Digital Dashboard to provide real-time update on Road works to Improve Transparency

A digital dashboard will be developed by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to deliver real-time updates on all citywide roadworks. The action was taken in reaction to opposition party leaders’ criticism of the Mumbai Road Concretization project, who charged the BMC with neglecting to perform pre-monsoon maintenance work in densely populated sections of the city like Bandra.

By providing real-time data on the status of maintenance and concretisation work as well as other policy-related information, the dashboard will increase openness and collaboration between various civic departments. The dashboard will also include details regarding the timeline for the requested work, the road defect liability period, and the growth of the road length over time.

Major roads in Mumbai are already being concreted by the BMC, along with beautification initiatives and pedestrian maintenance. The contract provisions, according to P Velrasu, extra municipal commissioner (projects), indicate that the work would last for 24 months, excluding the monsoon, but he has nonetheless confirmed that all significant road segments will be taken up for concretisation right away.

To guarantee the project’s success, the BMC will hire a consultant to research the difficulties the department had while working on the projects, come up with suitable solutions, gather daily data from the relevant departments, and compile everything before posting it on the website. Soon, a tender will be floated for this position.

The dashboard was developed in reaction to the lack of openness and coordination in the city’s roadworks, which has angered people and opposition party leaders and raised concerns. The new digital dashboard will offer a centralised platform for real-time updates and information on city roadworks, increasing transparency and fostering better coordination across various municipal departments.

Asif Zakaria, a former corporator from Bandra (West), wrote to P Velrasu to voice his worry over the lack of progress being made on the concretisation and upkeep of Bandra’s roads. No work has started on any of the authorised routes despite the work order having been granted months ago, according to Zakaria. He continued by saying that despite multiple roads being blocked off and dug up for weeks, work does not appear to be moving forward.

Major road work in the remaining parts would begin right after the monsoon, according to Velrasu, who also verified that directives had been given. By providing real-time updates on the status of this work, the dashboard will guarantee that locals have access to the most recent data on the evolution of the city’s road infrastructure.
