Marine Drive, also known as the Queen’s Necklace, is a prominent promenade in Mumbai that runs along the Arabian Sea. It offers a picturesque view of the iconic Mumbai skyline and is a popular spot for locals and tourists to relax and unwind.

However, the absence of proper barricades along the divider of Marine Drive has led to instances of unauthorized pedestrian crossings, posing a significant risk to pedestrians and motorists. To address this concern, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that it will install barriers and railings along the divider of Marine Drive.

Currently, the north and southbound carriageways of Marine Drive are separated by a single divider. However, the dividers are not particularly tall, making it easy for people to cross the highways without using the zebra crossing. This has led to several accidents in the past, making it necessary to install barriers to prevent unauthorized pedestrian crossings and enhance safety.

The decision to install the barriers was made following requests from the senior police inspector of the Marine Drive traffic division and the Federation of Churchgate Residents. The civic body has floated a tender for the fabrication and installation of the barriers/railings on the divider, from the NCPA dead end up to the Princess Street flyover. The BMC will spend approximately Rs 82 lakh on the project.

The installation of the barriers is expected to make Marine Drive safer for both pedestrians and motorists. Moreover, the railings will contribute to the central median’s visual appeal and improve the overall aesthetic value of the area. The BMC aspires that this project will play a significant role in making Marine Drive a safer and more attractive place for both locals and tourists.

BMC officials installed barricades/railings as requested by senior police inspector and Federation of Churchgate Residents. The aim was to restrict unauthorized pedestrian crossings and enhance central median’s appearance. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s visit to Marine Drive prompted the decision to install these barriers for tourists’ safety and area’s beauty enhancement.

To sum up, the BMC’s decision to install barriers and railings along the Marine Drive divider is a significant step towards ensuring pedestrian safety and enhancing the area’s beauty. The residents of the area have welcomed this move as they were worried about pedestrian safety on Marine Drive for a long time. The project is anticipated to be completed in the upcoming months, and it is expected to make Marine Drive a safer and more visually attractive place for everyone.
