A breakdown in the overhead power cables disrupted Mumbai’s train services on Saturday morning, affecting thousands of commuters. The malfunction, which occurred at about 7.30 am, disrupted rail service between Mankhurd and Vashi railway stations.
The breakdown left many people stranded and caused significant inconvenience as train services came to a complete halt for at least two hours, which was fixed by 9.30 am.
“We regret to inform you that there is disruption in services due to a broken Overhead Equipment (OHE) between Mankhurd and Vashi on the Harbour Line,” Rajnish Goyal, divisional railway manager of Central Railway’s Mumbai division said on X.
The disruption had a significant impact on daily commuters, many of whom rely on Mumbai’s train network for routine transit. According to reports, overcrowding was observed on railway platforms. Also, local buses were overcrowded as commuters sought alternative modes of transit.
“During this period, passengers are allowed to travel via the Transharbour Line using the same tickets and passes. This arrangement will be in place until the issue with the OHE is resolved,” the Central Railways said.
Authorities are currently examining the reason for the overhead line breakdown and have pledged to take preventative measures to avoid such events in the future.
