Mumbai’s iconic Churchgate station is all set to get a new name. The Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government has decided to rename the station after former Union Finance Minister Chintamanrao Deshmukh.
This decision was taken during the first national executive meeting of the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, held recently.
The move aims to honor the legacy of Deshmukh, a prominent figure in India’s history.
Chintamanrao Deshmukh was an Indian civil servant who served as the first Indian governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1943.
He was also the Finance Minister of India during 1950-56. Deshmukh was a key figure in the early years of India’s independence and played a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic policies.
The Shiv Sena faction, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, held its first national executive meeting after being allotted the party name and the bow and arrow symbol by the Election Commission.
The meeting discussed various proposals, including renaming the iconic Churchgate railway station after former Union Finance Minister Chintamanrao Deshmukh.

The decision was taken to pay tribute to Deshmukh’s contributions to the nation.
The station will be named Chintamanrao Deshmukh station, as per the resolution passed by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde.
Apart from the decision to rename Churchgate station, the national executive meeting of the Shiv Sena faction also saw the discussion of several other proposals.
These included the demand for giving Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, to Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The meeting also saw the formation of a three-member disciplinary committee and the passing a resolution to provide 80 percent employment to Bhoomiputra, or “sons of the soil.”
The meeting also decided to give the utmost importance and elite status to the Marathi language.
In the same meeting, Chief Minister Uday Samant announced the formation of a three-member disciplinary committee consisting of Chairman Dada Bhuse, Shurdaje Desai, and Sanjay More.
Eknath Shinde was retained as the main leader in the meeting and was granted all the powers of the party.
Renaming Churchgate station after Chintamanrao Deshmukh is a step towards honouring India’s heroes and acknowledging their contributions to the nation.
