BMC Plans to Build Mumbai’s Longest Flyover Connecting Eastern Freeway to Grant Road

Grant Road to Eastern Freeway Flyover Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to construct a 5.56 km long flyover bridge in south Mumbai to reduce congestion and ease traffic woes on P D’mello Road.

This step is taken to improve commuting in various parts of South Mumbai, including Dr BR Ambedkar, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Port Trust area, Tardeo, and Mumbai Central.

The project’s estimated cost is ₹743 crore, and the construction will be completed in 42 months, including monsoon.

The proposed elevated road, called Unnat Marg bridge, will be one of the longest bridges in Mumbai, connecting the Eastern Freeway to the southern part of the city.

Currently, the JJ flyover is 2.50 km long, and the Lalbaug flyover is 2.48 km long and is considered the longest flyover bridge in the city.

The elevated road called Unnat Marg bridge will extend from the Eastern Freeway starting near Orange Gate on P D’mello Road to the Grant Road station area.

The entry point ramp starts from Grant Road station and passes through Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, JJ Hospital, which will all the way connect at P D’mello Road on Eastern Freeway.

Currently, it takes approx 50 to 70 minutes to cover the distance of about 5.56 km from the Eastern Freeway to Grant Road. However, after the completion of the flyover bridge, it will just take 6 to 7 minutes for the journey.

The proposed elevated road will essentially reduce traffic congestion on P D’mello Road, making commuting easier in various parts of South Mumbai.

This will also help to reduce congestion on other routes travelling between South Mumbai and Eastern Freeway. According to the Bridges Department of BMC, the upcoming bridge will pull traffic from other roads of South Mumbai as well.

The proposed elevated road will reduce traffic congestion from Eastern Freeway to Grant Road Route.

This new elevated road is going to be a really important connection for our city. It will link up the coastal road with the eastern freeway. In addition, it will help reduce traffic woes on Dr BR Ambedkar, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Port Trust area, Tardeo, and Mumbai Central.

The construction of the Unnat Marg bridge will help reduce traffic congestion and commuting time in Mumbai.

This new flyover road will help to reduce the congestion on other roads as well.

BMC has an estimated 15-year defect liability period and has invited tenders from experienced firms to complete the project efficiently.

Once operational, this flyover will be one of the longest bridges in Mumbai, connecting the Eastern Freeway to South Mumbai and serving as a crucial link to the coastal road.
