Mumbai police have requested in writing to the Brihanmumbai Corporation (BMC) that the well-known South Mumbai restaurant Bachelorr’s be demolished immediately due to traffic congestion.
Bachelorr’s, a well-liked restaurant in the Girgaon Chowpatty area that is almost 90 years old, is well-known for serving delectable street-style fast dishes such as shakes, pizzas, wraps, sandwiches, juices, etc. The wacky green chilli ice cream is credited to the legendary cafe founded by Ghaziabad immigrant O P Agarwal in the 1930s.
In its prime, many of the famous personalities like Prithviraj Kapoor and his family, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor, cricket players, and foreign ambassadors all visit Bachelorr’s for dessert. Today also it continues to draw dozens of loyal customers.
The police officers, who have been blocking off the area with barriers for the past two weeks, claim that the famous Bachelorr’s ice cream shop significantly slows down traffic.
The police issued a letter to the assistant municipal commissioner of D ward requesting that Bachelorr’s, the well-known ice cream shop near Chowpatty seaface, have its licence revoked. They claim heavy traffic outside the restaurant, and there is heavy traffic outside the restaurant, and double-parking causes issues along the exclusive route.
Cops have previously taken action after observing double parking and management operating the establishment till late at night while on patrol. According to the police, the issue returns after a few days, and traffic jams start to form. Therefore, the police have stated that steps should be taken against the parlour to permanently prevent accidents in the future.
The D-Ward officials will make the final decision about the next steps. They still haven’t responded in writing to the police.
However, the management of the parlour, claimed that neither the police nor the representatives of the civic authorities had provided them with any information in this respect. They continued by saying that the Coastal Road Project and other public works projects are to blame for the traffic congestion, not visitors to Bachelorr’s.
Traffic jams are very common in the city. The Sukh Sagar Bridge, Patel Bridge, or Mafatlal Bath Bridge, along with the sidewalk crossing signal next to a hotel, are all being demolished or closed, which is what is actually generating traffic jams in the area. Naturally, there will be traffic problems. Also, nothing about closure or cancelling our licence has been heard. They followed all instructions when roadblocks were put up by police a few days ago for the G20 meeting, told Aditya Agarwal, who is recently in charge of that store.
