Close on the heels of the announcement of the Mumbai Coastal Road being named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the demand for naming two other major infrastructure projects in Mumbai has gained momentum.

This article delves into the requests to name the Bandra-Versova Sea Link after Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) after Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Exploring the significance of these demands and the individuals involved, we unravel the complexities surrounding the power of names and the narratives they embody.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, was an influential figure in India’s independence struggle and a renowned political activist. As a member of the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and a founder of the Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar played a pivotal role in shaping India’s nationalist discourse. Imprisoned by the British for his political activities, he endured years of incarceration while advocating for independence.

The demand to rename the Bandra-Versova Sea Link after Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has gained traction, primarily championed by the Shiv Sena, a regional political party in Maharashtra. The party argues that Savarkar’s unwavering patriotism and nationalist ideology deserve recognition and that naming the sea link after him would serve as a befitting tribute to his invaluable contributions to the nation.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a statesman and former Prime Minister of India, is widely regarded as one of the most esteemed figures in Indian politics. Known for his inclusive leadership and visionary statesmanship, Vajpayee left an indelible mark on India’s political landscape. His tenure witnessed significant economic reforms, including the successful Pokhran nuclear tests and efforts towards fostering peace with Pakistan.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to which Atal Bihari Vajpayee belonged, has spearheaded the demand to name the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) after the revered leader. The BJP asserts that Vajpayee’s contributions to the nation and his leadership qualities make him an apt choice for this honour. They believe that renaming the MTHL after Vajpayee would serve as a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy.

The naming of infrastructure projects has long been a subject of debate and contention in India. Names carry deep cultural and historical significance, often becoming a means of honouring revered figures who have contributed to the country’s progress. However, naming controversies frequently arise as different groups and political parties hold diverse opinions on whom to honour. The decision-making process requires careful consideration of the sentiments of all stakeholders involved.
