FASTag daily cost collection hits all-time high, crosses 193 crore-mark

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) released a report on Tuesday stating that the FASTag’s daily toll collection has reached approximately 193 crores.

“On April 29, 2023, the daily cost collection using the FASTag framework achieved a significant milestone, reaching an unprecedented high of Rs. 193.15 crores, with 1.16 crore transactions held in a single day,” the NHAI explained to the media.

This is a significant turning point for the system, which has consistently increased since the government mandated it in February 2021.The FASTag system has grown from 770 to 1,228 toll plazas, including 339 state toll plazas, with over 6.9 crore FASTags distributed to users and a penetration rate of approximately 97%.

With the framework’s viability, expressway travellers have encountered diminished holding-up times at NH Charge Squares, bringing about a more productive cost activity. The FASTag system not only works well for collecting tolls, but it has also made contactless payments for parking fees at over 140 parking lots in more than 50 Indian cities easy and secure.

The FASTag has also enabled quicker and secure way to direct payment for parking fees at any 140 parking lots offered by FASTag which is available in more than 50 cities across the country.

This adoption of the FASTag by highway users has not only increased the efficiency of toll operations but also led to a more precise valuation of road assets, attracting additional investment in India’s highway infrastructure.

FASTag utilizes radio-recurrence recognizable proof (RFID) innovation, which gives clients a smooth hybrid at cost courts without ending. The FASTag that is linked to the bank wallet is used to make the digital payment.

In addition, the NHAI stated that it is actively pursuing the completion of the prerequisites for the implementation of a GNSS-based tolling system in India to enable free-flow tolling.

To enable free-flow tolling in India, the government is actively pursuing the implementation of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based tolling system. The government wants to provide a quick route with a hassle-free tolling experience to all travellers on highway.
