IndiGo Flight Successfully Lands in Mumbai After Engine Failure Mid-Flight; Aircraft Held for Maintenance

Tuesday’s IndiGo flight from Madurai made a successful landing in Mumbai despite having one of its engines fail.

The Airbus A321 made a successful landing in Mumbai because twin-engine aircraft can run safely on a single engine.

“Prior to arrival in Mumbai, IndiGo aircraft 6E-2012 from Madurai to Mumbai experienced a mechanical problem. The landing in Mumbai was given priority by the pilot. The aircraft is being held in Mumbai and will resume flight after the required maintenance has been completed. We apologise for the trouble this has caused the travellers”, the airline spokeswoman stated.

The aviation regulator, DGCA, had earlier stated that, “following Pratt & Whitney’s announcement regarding material anomalies on the PW1100G engines worldwide affecting approximately 200 engines, the aerospace manufacturer issued the Service Instructions (SI) enumerating the serial numbers of the engine series which are required to be removed for performing Angle Ultrasonic Scan Inspection during shop visits and are consequently required to be removed”.

However, the flight made it to its destination safely when the pilot gave the aircraft’s landing in Mumbai priority, according to the budget airline’s statement.

According to the information currently available, the aircraft is being held in Mumbai and will resume flight after the required maintenance has been completed.

According to a report, on the twin-engine Airbus A321 (VT-IUJ), one of its Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines shut down while the aircraft was in flight, but the other engine continued to run when the aircraft landed”.

Following repeated reports of failure, the US engine manufacturer decided to recall 1,200 A320neo engines last month. 200 engines will be removed and evaluated in mid-September, and the remaining 1,000 engines will be recalled over the course of the following nine to twelve months.

The IndiGo aeroplane only had one engine functional when it landed at Mumbai airport, according to airport officials. After the pilot reported a mechanical issue with one of the P&W engines mid-flight, the flight from Madurai to Mumbai safely landed at Mumbai airport with one engine, according to a statement.

Due to problems with the engines, nearly 40 aircraft of IndiGo and Go First Airlines that were powered by P&W engines have been grounded.
