DMart was founded in 2002 by Mr. Radhakishan Damani when he was 45-years old. It launched its first store in Powai Hiranandani Gardens. 

Radha Kishan Damani, or RK Damani, is a Mumbai-based billionaire investor and a businessman. According to Forbes’s Richest Indian list published in 2020, he became the fourth richest person in India, with a net worth of over $16.5 Billion.

When RK Damani started DMart, he was already a legendary name in the Indian Stock Market. He had already made his millions in the market.

DMart has a total of 284 stores across 11 states in India.

The primary reason behind its success is due to its competitive price on all its product. DMart is one of the biggest supermarket retailers in India, which offers a very low price at a discounted rate from the MRP of the product. And, when it comes to discounts, a large section of the middle-income group will never miss the opportunity to save money.

Generally, people are more attracted to discounts and offers, and DMart is the leader in this segment. Therefore, DMart receives large footfall in all its stores across all states in India. According to DMart, the primary objective of DMart is to provide all its product at a bargain price such that customer gets value for the money they spend.

But, how does DMart is able to give huge discounts on MRP of the product even though we won’t find such prices with the online retailers? Below are some key strategies used by DMart to give your product at a very competitive price.

Cash Discounts: Usually supplier receives its payment after some days and months of the delivery from the Buyer/Retailer. However, DMart is very quick in its payment to its supplier; as a result, suppliers provide a good cash discount.

Bulk Buying: DMart buys products in bulk from the manufacturer, and in return, it receives a volume discount from the buyer/manufacturer.

Slotting Fees: The company has to pay slotting fees to DMart if they want their product to be on the shelf of DMart. The company agrees to pay this slotting fee as the manufacturer or seller can reach its product to a large group of audiences in 284 locations in India.

Owned Stores: Most DMart stores are all owned, avoiding rental costs.

Minimum Infrastructure: If you have ever visited any stores of DMart, you may have noticed that it doesn’t have an attractive interior compared to other supermarkets/hypermarket retailers in India. 

All DMart stores in India have a simple interior and exterior design such that they spend significantly less money on infrastructure.  

Own Brand and Product: DMart also generate income from its in-house manufacturing brand and products. The brands are D Mart Minimax, D Mart Premia, D Homes, Dutch Harbour, etc.

Mr. Radhakishan Damani was an investor and was more attracted toward consumer-based product stocks. He always wanted to start up a business in the consumer-based sector since he believed that the sector had potential.

He started a franchisee called “Apna Bazaar,” a department store in Nerul Navi Mumbai, and soon added many more outlets. 

In 2000, he quit the stock market to start its own hypermarket chain, DMart. It began with its first branch store in 2002 in Powai. The chain had 25 stores in 2010, and later the company overgrew.
