The Maharashtra government has recently taken a noteworthy decision to promote the service sector in Navi Mumbai Integrated Industrial Township (NMIIT), allowing it to occupy 85% of the land reserved for industrial purposes.
This move aims to transform Navi Mumbai into a new IT and service sector hub of Maharashtra, thereby bringing more job opportunities and promoting the growth of educational and research institutions in the area.
Initially established as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in 2006-07, NMIIT was later converted into an Integrated Industrial Township in 2018.
The project was designed to have industrial units and residential projects in a 85:15 ratio.
The new government resolution, dated February 17, permits the service sector on the land reserved for industrial purposes in NMIIT.
This includes information technology centers, education, and knowledge centers, medical education institutions with hospitals, and more.
Bhushan Gagrani, additional chief secretary (urban development), stated that Navi Mumbai already has an ecosystem for the IT sector and service sector.
The upcoming international airport and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link are expected to make NMIIT easily accessible from Mumbai and a hub for next-generation IT and allied services.
This move is expected to generate more employment opportunities and boost the economy of the state.
