Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, recently held a press conference in Mumbai where he shared updates on the progress of the Metro 3 project.
According to Fadnavis, the first phase of Metro 3, which is the Bandra to Seepz route, is set to be operational by the end of next year or by January.
He added that the car shed at Aarey has completed 54% of its work, and the government is trying to finish the project by December.
Fadnavis also spoke about the current status of all metro projects in Mumbai, highlighting that the Metro 3 project is the most important project for the city.
He added that this 40 km underground metro project is Asia’s longest single-line project.
However, during the previous Mahavikas Aghadi government, the issue of Aarey Carshed arose, and nothing was done for three years. The moratorium on the work of the car shed was lifted after the new government came in, and the work resumed.
Fadnavis informed that 80% of the Metro 3 project has been completed, and a total length of 337 km metro works are underway in the Mumbai metropolitan area.
He highlighted that between 2014 and 2019, metro work was undertaken on a large scale, and at that time, this project of 337 km was a dream of many people.
Today, nine of these major corridors have reached 40 to 70% occupancy, and a total of 338 km of metro works are underway.
There are a total of 14 routes, more than 225 stations, and these works are worth more than one and a half lakh crores. Fadnavis continued by saying that by 2031, one crore passengers plan to use the metro.
The first phase of Metro 3, which is expected to be operational by next year, will cover a distance of 11.07 km, connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Seepz via 12 stations. The stations include BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, Seepz Village, and Seepz.
This phase will provide a much-needed respite to the citizens of Mumbai who face severe traffic congestion on this route.
The Metro 3 project is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing a faster and more convenient mode of transportation to the citizens of Mumbai.
The completion of the project will significantly reduce the travel time and also help in curbing air pollution in the city.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the nodal agency for the implementation of the project, and Larsen & Toubro is the contractor for the construction of the car shed.
