With an estimated population of more than 10 lac, Mira-Bhayandar has consistently been the epicentre of human’s most fundamental need: water. The heat and numerous water cuts in March have already caused problems for the people of Mira-Bhayandar, making daily life a little more challenging. According to reports, the twin city’s neighbourhood areas have had water problems, which could increase concerns during the hottest days of summer. Furthermore, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has not discovered any answers.
Residents have claimed that the areas lack water for a number of hours each day and that the problem is not resolved even when the supply is only sufficient for a maximum of two days. The locality needs water over 225 MLD, but the amount of water that it is receiving is less than 180 MLD, and it is also periodically suspended by the Thane district. Additionally, other problems like leaks and stealing worsen the already existing problems.
The water supply section conducted unexpected inspections between May 9 and 12, and after receiving complaints about low water pressure that was causing an uneven flow of water to housing societies, they seized 58 booster pumps that had been installed to push water with more pressure towards the buildings.
The Indian Penal Code’s relevant clauses give the MBMC the authority to bring charges against office holders of housing for theft and inciting a breach of peace.
In order to identify the issue and find a solution, numerous neighbourhood organisations, residential groups, and societies have asked for an assessment of the situation. However, the local government has not been getting any feedback and is unable to do anything about it.
Recently, MIDC representatives attended a meeting in the presence of Minister Subhash Desai, but no resolution or agreements were made. According to subject-matter experts, if the same problem is being caused by technical difficulties, it would be advisable to find a quick fix.
