Mumbai: Affordable food court to open soon at BKC

The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), which is home to a number of upscale eateries, will now have a location where customers can get reasonably priced cuisine. MMRDA has started the process of building an urban plaza with a food court in the main commercial hub.

In order to improve last-mile connectivity in the region, which receives an average of almost half a million tourists every day, the MMRDA is also attempting to restart a bicycle-sharing initiative. Hindustan Times recently highlighted a number of obstacles faced by visitors to the BKC, including the lack of readily available, unaffordable priced food and transportation difficulties.

The MMRDA sources say that the food court will be built in GN-Block. On GN-Block plot C-5, they intend to build a restaurant and food court that is both reasonably priced and of high quality. An official from the MMRDA said that they have invited tenders for the same, which will be opened in the first week of June.

Leading corporate offices and upscale restaurants can be found in the GN-Block. Two and a half lakh people visit the workplaces in BKC every day, and an additional two lakh individuals commute there for business.

The demand for budget-friendly eating establishments in BKC is urgent. Additionally, there have been more events in the neighbourhood since Jio World Centre and Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Art Centre (NMACC) opened, which has increased traffic outside of business hours.

The shared bicycle initiative will link offices in BKC.

There are 30 kilometres of bike lanes in BKC. However, over time, these have been replaced by auto rickshaws and other four-wheelers, which park their vehicles in the designated bicycle lanes. These cycling lanes’ divider bollards have been knocked over.

In buses, The BEST transports 74,000 people daily on average at BKC. In 2018 and 2019, this was roughly 42,000 and 48,000, respectively. There are approximately 13 different bus routes that travel between BKC, Kurla, and Bandra stations, according to BEST officials.

People are now at the mercy of the sharing taxi drivers that operate out of the Bandra and Kurla railway terminals. These shared auto rickshaw drivers frequently behave badly, overcharge, and disobey traffic laws.
