Mumbai, India – In a game-changing transformation for air travel infrastructure, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is embarking on a colossal redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1), which will be shut down this year.
What Makes Mumbai’s T1 Redevelopment a Game-Changer?
The project aim is to increase passenger capacity and modernize the facilities to meet global aviation standards. T1 currently serves about 12 million passengers a year. When fully redeveloped, the terminal will increase capacity by 42% to serve 20 million passengers annually.
Timeline and Temporary Shifts
Redevelopment will commence in November 2025 and is fully expected to be completed by 2028-29. While construction is being done, flights previously operated out of T1 — majorly operated by airlines such as IndiGo and Air India — will be moved to Terminal 2 (T2) and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
What’s New? Innovative Design: A First for Sustainability
The redesigned T1 at Mumbai will be India’s first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport terminal. The new design will combine greenery, natural light, and energy-efficient systems that will provide a blueprint for green airport infrastructure in the country.
