The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting heavy rainfall for the city of Mumbai over the next four to five days. This announcement comes as a respite for Mumbaiites who experienced a brief break from heavy rains over the weekend, with 45mm of rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday.
IMD cautions against venturing into the sea due to high tidal surge
Officials are urging citizens to avoid beaches and stay away from the sea as the maximum tidal surge is expected to reach 4.6 to 4.8 meters, peaking on July 5. This measurement surpasses the 4.5-meter high-water mark, posing potential risks to beachgoers and boaters.
According to meteorologists from the IMD in Mumbai, there is currently a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal that is expected to descend and develop into a low-pressure area soon. This development will activate the monsoon, which runs offshore from Maharashtra to Kerala, resulting in heavy rainfall in the Konkan region.
Skymet Predicts Rain Patterns for Mumbai
Private weather forecaster Skymet predicts that Mumbai will experience moderate showers with intermittent breaks for the next two days. Most of the rain activity will be concentrated in the late evening, night, and early morning periods.
As the days progress, the intensity of the rain will increase, with heavy showers expected on July 6 and 7. Although there will be a slight reduction on July 8, the rain will still be substantial. From July 9 onward, the showers are anticipated to become lighter and more moderate, bringing some relief to the city.
Mumbai residents should prepare themselves for heavy rainfall over the next five days as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The warning issued by the IMD advises against venturing into the sea due to the expected high tidal surge. The formation of a low-pressure area triggered by a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal is set to activate the monsoon, leading to heavy downpours in the Konkan region.
According to Skymet, Mumbai can expect moderate showers with breaks in the coming days, followed by a period of intense rainfall on July 6 and 7. While there may be a slight reduction on July 8, the rain will continue to be heavy. However, from July 9 onward, the showers are expected to become lighter and more manageable.
Mumbaikars are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of heavy rainfall.
