The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is a game-changer for the city’s infrastructure. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken the challenging task of constructing a 10.58-km-long coastal road connecting Nariman Point in south Mumbai to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). The project aims to provide a smooth, fast, and safe commute to the residents and visitors of Mumbai.
The most challenging and time-consuming part of the construction process, the final boring work for the second underground tunnel of the MCRP, is set to be completed by March-end. The two tunnels, around 2-km-long each, are being constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). These tunnels will run parallel to each other to form a separate corridor for the movement of north-south vehicles. A major portion of these tunnels will run below the Arabian Sea, making it a complex engineering feat.
The MCRP project is well within its schedule, and the BMC intends to finish the project by the end of this year. Currently, 70% of the coastal road work has been completed, and ancillary work like setting up utility chambers and fire fighting systems are underway.
During the announcement of the second phase of Mumbai Beautification Plan, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said that the coastal road will become operational by November 2023. This news has been received with great enthusiasm by Mumbai’s residents, who have been eagerly waiting for the completion of the project.
The MCRP is expected to bring several benefits to the city, including reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and providing a scenic route for leisurely drives along the coast.
