In a remarkable announcement, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has revealed a groundbreaking update on the Mumbai coastal road project. This ambitious endeavor is set to extend all the way to Virar, a distant suburb, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transportation infrastructure.
The Mumbai coastal road project, spanning an impressive 29.2 kilometers, is making remarkable progress along the city’s western coast. Designed to connect Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north, this vital project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Mumbai.
Chief Minister Shinde has brought forth exciting news by confirming the extension of the coastal road project beyond its original plans. The expansion will now stretch to Dahisar and Virar in the western suburbs, offering much-needed relief to motorists navigating through the challenging traffic conditions. This extension will specifically address the bumper-to-bumper situations that frequently plague the western suburbs.
To ensure an efficient execution of this large-scale project, it has been divided into two distinct phases. The first phase includes a 9.98-kilometer stretch, starting from the Princess Street flyover and ending at the Worli side of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.The second phase encompasses a 19.22-kilometer segment, connecting the Bandra end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Kandivali.
Once completed, the coastal road will boast eight lanes and is projected to accommodate approximately 130,000 vehicles on a daily basis. This substantial upgrade in infrastructure will dramatically reduce travel time between South Mumbai and the Western Suburbs, slashing it down from an arduous 2 hours to a mere 40 minutes. The project’s primary aim is to enhance connectivity and provide commuters with a seamless travel experience.
The construction of the Mumbai coastal road project commenced over five years ago and carries an estimated total cost of Rs 12,721 crore.
A significant milestone in the project’s progress has been reached as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai’s civic body, recently completed the excavation of the second underground tunnel at Priyadarshini Park. These twin tunnels, each spanning a length of 2.070 meters with an outer diameter of 12.19 meters, signify substantial progress in the construction process.
With the goal of reducing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity, this ambitious project will not only save valuable time for commuters but also strengthen the city’s overall infrastructure.
