People travelling in Mumbai will have to spend more on their commute as black-and-yellow taxi and auto-rickshaw fares have increased in the city since February 1, 2025. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) on January 23 approved the proposal for a fare hike in auto-rickshaws and taxis. The decision to increase the fare was taken due to increases in fuel prices, inflation, and maintenance costs.
Mumbai Auto-Rickshaw Fare Hike:
Minimum Fare: ₹23 to ₹26
Per Kilometer Rate: From ₹15.33 to ₹17.14
Mumbai Taxi Fare Hike:
Black-and-Yellow Taxis:
Minimum Fare: Hike from ₹28 to ₹31
Per Kilometer Rate: Uplift from ₹18.66 to ₹20.66
Cool Cabs: (Blue-and-Silver AC Taxis)
Minimum Fare: Hiked from ₹40 to ₹48
Per Kilometer Rate: From ₹26.71 to ₹37.20
Why the Fare Hike?
The move comes after the government accepted the recommendations of the Khatua Committee in March 2020. The increase is considering rising automobile prices, fuel prices, insurance charges, and loan interest rates. This is the first revision of the fare in two years, as the last revision was in October 2022.
Mandatory Meter Recalibration
Between February 1 and April 30, 2025, auto-rickshaws and taxi drivers have to adjust their meters. In the meantime, they are obliged to keep an official revised tariff card to be transparent with the passengers.
Other Steps to Support Public Convenience
The MMRTA has also approved the following projects to enhance last-mile connectivity:
2 new taxi stands
68 auto-rickshaw stands
9 shared auto-rickshaw stands
All these alterations are designed to facilitate the movement of commuters and ease traffic in essential parts of Mumbai.
