In a monumental decision, the Ministry of Railways has announced plans to upgrade Mumbai’s local train network by introducing state-of-the-art Vande Metro trains. Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3 and 3A, the ministry has placed an order for the procurement of 238 Vande Metro (suburban) trains. This development marks a significant step forward for Mumbai’s transportation system, promising improved quality and enhanced commuting experiences for millions of passengers. Let’s delve into the details of this transformative initiative.

The decision to upgrade Mumbai’s local trains into Vande Metro trains signifies a momentous shift for the city’s transportation infrastructure. With their sleek design and modern amenities, Vande Metro trains have gained popularity across the country. By introducing these trains to Mumbai’s local network, the Indian Railways aims to enhance passenger comfort, reduce travel time, and provide a more efficient and enjoyable commuting experience.

Unlike conventional railway factories, the upgraded Vande Metro trains for Mumbai will be developed by technology partners in their own factories, adhering to the “Make in India” guidelines. This approach emphasizes the country’s commitment to promoting indigenous manufacturing capabilities and boosting the domestic economy. By collaborating with technology partners, the Ministry of Railways aims to leverage expertise and innovation to deliver world-class trains that are specifically tailored to Mumbai’s unique requirements.

To facilitate the procurement of the 238 Vande Metro trains, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has been directed to invite tenders for the project. The process will prioritize stringent maintenance requirements for the next 35 years, ensuring that the trains operate at their optimal efficiency throughout their lifespan. By maintaining high-quality standards, the authorities seek to instill confidence in commuters and establish a reliable and sustainable local train system.

Recognizing the diverse requirements of Mumbai’s railway divisions, the MRVC has been instructed to consult with Western and Central Railway regarding the desired specifications for 12/15 car trains. This collaborative approach ensures that the upgraded Vande Metro trains align with the specific needs and operational considerations of each division. By taking into account the input of various stakeholders, the authorities aim to optimize the train design and further enhance passenger experiences.

The decision to upgrade Mumbai’s local trains comes after a period of controversy surrounding the introduction of AC local services. In response to public demand, particularly from working-class commuters, NCP president Sharad Pawar advocated for the withdrawal of AC local trains and the restoration of regular services. Following protests and concerns raised by commuters, the Central Railway withdrew ten new AC services within a short period. However, this upgrade initiative heralds a positive transformation for Mumbai’s local train network, aiming to cater to the diverse needs of commuters.
