Mumbai Metro Line 1 is the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro corridor, the first rapid transit metro system in Mumbai. This metro corridor is 11.4 KM elevated and consists of 12 stations from Versova to Ghatkopar.
It was a breakthrough for Mumbai when it received its first Metro Rail Network. The overall cost estimate for the Mumbai Metro Line 1 is ₹4,321 crore (US$610 million), which is 84% more than the initially quoted amount of ₹ 2,356 crores as per the signed contract in March 2007.
On 21st June 2006, India Former Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh, laid the foundation stone for Mumbai Metro Phase-1.
In March 2007, The metro project for Line 1 was awarded to Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), a joint venture company owned by Reliance Infrastructure (69%), MMRDA (26%), and Veolia Transport (5%).
On 8th June 2014, Line 1 started its operation.

Mumbai Metro Line 1 Fares
The minimum fare for a single journey traveling in metro line 1 is ₹10, and the maximum fare is ₹ 40.
On Jan 22nd, 2020, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) announced a new plan offering unlimited rides on Metro during the validity period of 30 days. Metro Line 1 also offers monthly trip pass and other fare options.

Maharashtra former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, along with Reliance Infra Chairman Anil Ambani and wife Tina Ambani flagged off Mumbai first metro service from Versova Station.
The line was scheduled to open for public at 12:10 pm but delayed by 10min and departed at 12:20 pm. It got furthered delayed by nearly half an hour due to technical issue.
MMOPL announced a special introductory fare of ₹ 10 for the first 30 days of service without restriction on distance travelled.
The line operated for 11 hours, and carried 2.40 lakh commuters on the opening day.

The Mumbai Metro Line 1 finally gets the approval from Railway Board by newly-appointed former Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda.
Mumbai Metro Line 1 received safety clearance from the CMRS on 2nd May 2014.
However, the line is still waiting for approval from the Railway Board for its rolling stock. According to MMOPL, the required paper already been submitted on 22nd April 2014 and would commence the services within seven days of receiving the Railway Board Approval.
Logo Issue: The MMOPL unveiled a new logo, which uses the name "Mumbai Metro" but it also includes the Reliance Infrastructure and MMRDA Logo.
CMRS completed a physical inspection of the Mumbai Metro line 1, which started was on 18th April by P.S. Baghel.
MMOPL had submitted the required paper to the railway board for approval of rolling stock.
MMRDA and MMOPL authorities approached and applied to Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for a safety certificate inspection.
MMOPL was granted a "speed certificate" from the RDSO. Officials now head toward the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approval for a safety certificate before commissioning the line for public use.
A successful fire mock drill was conducted at Airport Road metro station on the Versova-Andheri Ghatkopar (VAG) corridor by MMOPL, Mumbai Fire Brigade and Mumbai Police.
The Research Design & Standard Organisation (RDSO) has finished conducting safety tests on the 11.07 Km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) metro line corridor, and the report will be sent soon to the commissioner of the Metro Rail Safety. The trail was completed in a record time of 11 days, much ahead of the scheduled completion date of 22nd February.
RInfra announced that construction was complete. However, there was still some construction of roads to stations such as Jagruti Nagar, and Asalfa Road was pending to be completed, which was supposed to be completed by MMRDA and not MMOPL.
Logo Issue: MMRDA confirmed that Rinfra had agreed to change the name from Reliance Metro to Mumbai Metro.
Logo Issue: In oppose to remove the Reliance Logo from all Metro Line 1 stations, Shiv Sena also raised their concern. Shiv Sena MLA Subhash Desai sent a letter to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan opposing Reliance Metro Name and expressing support for Mumbai Metro Name.
Logo Issue: Republican Party of India (Athavale) workers protested the name Reliance Metro by blackening the boards of Reliance's logo at Chakala metro station.
Logo Issue: In a press statement issued by Rinfra blamed MMRDA for having "failed to provide any guidance on this subject during the bidding stage and/or during the implementation stage."
Logo Issue: MMRDA sent a letter to RInfra to change the name of Metro Line 1 from Reliance Metro to Mumbai Metro and remove the reliance logo from Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line.
According to MMRDA, the original concession agreement states that the project should be named as Mumbai Metro.
An activist Anil Galgali had filed Right to Information (RTI) query to MMRDA regarding the Metro Line 1 construction work status. As of December 2013, construction work was still 5% pending.
The response from MMRDA states that Versova, D.N. Nagar, Azad Nagar, Chakala, and Airport Road stations were 99% complete and wherein Andheri, Saki Naka, Marol, and Western Express Highway stations completed 95-98%. Major construction was pending at Ghatkopar, which records 90% completed status, Asalfa completed 80%, and Jagruti Nagar stations completed 85%.
A successful Metro trial run was conducted for the first time to cover 7KM from Versova to Airport Station on Mumbai Metro Line 1. MMRDA additional commissioner SVR Srinivas and other officials from MMRDA and Reliance Infra were on board for the test ride.
MMRDA official told to Business Standard that the commissioning of 2KM Versova to Azad Nagar stretch on Metro Line 1 will be further delayed for operation, as the Central Railway Safety Commissioner's approval is still awaited. Also, some of the facilities on stations were still incomplete.
Under the presence of former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, a successful 2 km trial run on Line 1 was conducted from Versova to Azad Nagar stations. He also stated that the line 1 would be open partially for public use from Versova to Azad Nagar by September 2013 and while full 11.40 KM would be operational by December.
Land Acquisition Issue: MMRDA finally gets 100% right of way for the entire alignment of Mumbai Metro Line 1. Although MMRDA had acquired 100% Land Ownership by DEC 2011, but due to minaret of a mosque near Andheri station and a portion of the roof of Maheshwar Temple near Jagruti Nagar station was obstructing the development of the route for Line 1.
These issues were finally settled on October 2012 by MMRDA to demolish the portion of the temple roof and minaret to allow the construction of Mumbai Metro.
Land Acquisition Issue: As per the contract, MMRDA was supposed to hand over the right of way to MMOPL by mid-2008; however, as of August 2008, only 20% of the land was made available.
Work began on Mumbai Metro Line 1 by MMOPL.
Work order was issued for the project.

MMRDA approved Master Plan for Mumbai Metro along with a phased implementation plan in a meeting. The Master Plan includes nine corridors covering a length of 146.5 km, out of which 32.5 km is underground, and the rest are elevated.
MMRDA ( Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) appoints DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) to prepare the Master Plan for Mumbai Metro and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the priority corridors.
