Mumbai Metro Line 8: How CIDCO Plans Metro Connection from CSMIA to Navi Mumbai Airport

A Metro network will be built by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) to connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports with the rapid transit system.

This project was announced earlier and the CIDCO has begun work on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Metro corridor.

A 35-kilometre Line will be created from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the forthcoming Navi Mumbai Global Airport.

Currently there is no direct mass transit system between these two airports.

Mumbai-Navi Mumbai Airports Metro Line

Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro, which connects Belapur and Pendhar-Taloja, is close to completion and is scheduled to open later this year. At Mankhurd, this line will be extended to connect with Mumbai Metro Line 8, also known as the “Gold Line.”

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) requested CIDCO in October of last year to prepare the DPR for the section from Mankhurd to Sagar Sangam on Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1-A, as well as from Belapur to Navi Mumbai Airport, while CIDCO develops the stretch from Mankhurd to Navi Mumbai Airport. Since 2014, the Metro 8 corridor has been included in the MMRDA’s Metro Master Plan.

It is anticipated that commercial operations on Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro will commence soon. The Commission of Railway Safety (CMRS) has already granted permission to the corridor.

There will be stations at belapur, Sector-7 Belapur, Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Sector 11 Kharghar, Sector 14 Kharghar, Central Park, Pethapada, Sector 34 Kharghar, Panchnand, and Pendhar Port on the elevated corridor that stretches for 11.1 kilometres between Belapur and Pendhar.

The use of Metro-Neo for the upcoming Metro Lines 2, 3, and 4 in Navi Mumbai was also approved by the CIDCO. An overhead traction system powers the Metro Neo, an electric trolley bus with bi-articulated rubber tyres.
