Mumbai Metro Line-1 started its operation on 8th Jun 2014 and completed its eight years of service. Mumbai Metro One is the first metro rail service for the city of Mumbai, which connects the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. It is also the first metro rail project in the country to be built under the PPP (public-private partnership) model.
Mumbai Metro tweeted a video through the official handle on Wednesday and wrote: “On this day, in 2014, our dream came true. The ride was a first of its kind, and the feeling was brand new. Eight years and counting, this is not the end of the story. Mumbaikars, it’s you who have helped us achieve this glory. Thank you for making it a nice day for us.”
From the day of its launch, the metro has covered nearly 1 crore kms with 16 operational trains, with around 6.25 lakh kms covered by each train. It has completed cumulative ridership of 720 million; on an average, 8.8 lakh trips have been operated in these eight years for all Mumbaikars.
Metro One also highlighted their achievement during these eight years. Metro One has achieved a record of carrying 5.2 lakh commuters in a day. It also launched the Mobile QR ticketing system on 17th Nov 2017, the first metro rail to introduce this service in the country.
Metro One also introduced QR Based paper tickets on 16th Jan 2020 to eliminate the use of the existing plastic tokens system. This initiative has helped contribute toward a sustainable green environment by discontinuing the use of plastic. The QR paper ticket is also two times faster than the plastic token system.
Also, in April 2022, the metro one launched another green initiative to provide a hassle-free experience to commuters, enabling Mumbaikars to book the metro ticket directly on WhatsApp. Metro One is the first MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) in the world to offer e-tickets on WhatsApp.
