The long-awaited Metro Line 2A and 7 Phase 2 is all set for inauguration on 19th January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officially confirmed on Thursday. Both lines have cleared major milestones by receiving the safety clearance certificate from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).
S.V.R. Srinivas, The Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), said that the testing of rolling stock, signaling system, civil works, tracks, and speed trials had been completed successfully for phase-2 of both the lines and received CMRS mandatory safety certification on 12th January. He also said, “We are now ready to provide world-class services to the Mumbaikars after receiving the clearances for the commercial operations of the lines.”
Srinivas said that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis inspected the lines on Thursday at Gundvali (Andheri west) station.
“Mumbai is so looking forward to most popular global leader Hon PM Narendra Modi ji inaugurate the 35 km long phase 2 of Mumbai Metro 2A – yellow line & Mumbai Metro 7 – red line, bringing about huge relief in the lives of millions of Mumbaikars, especially in Western Mumbai!,” twitted by Devendra Fadnavis.
“It is matter of such great pride that the Bhoomipujan too of these Metro lines was done by PM Narendra Modi ji. Along with CM Eknath Shinde ji, today, inspected the Metro at Gundvali (Andheri west) station. Preparations are in full swing and excitement is in the air!” Devendra Fadnavis commented on Twitter after inspecting both metro lines.
Phase 1 for Metro Line 7 and 2A was inaugurated by former CM Uddhav Thackeray in April 2022 and partially started commercial operation for the line on a 20 km stretch. The line runs between Aarey and Dhanukarwadi. Currently, the footfall for both these lines is about 25,000 commuters per day, which is considerably less than the estimation. However, according to Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), Metro lines 2A and 7 are expected to have a daily ridership of over 3 lakh passengers.
Metro Line 2A and 7 will provide an interchange facility with the existing Mumbai Metro Line 1. Metro Line 2A will provide an interchange at Andheri West and Line 7 at Andheri East station.
