Exciting news for Mumbai residents! The BMC chief, Iqbal Singh Chahal, recently announced that the first phase of the Mumbai coastal road is expected to open to the public on November 1, 2023.
The project has been in development for several years and is set to transform the city’s transportation system.
The first phase covers a 10.5km-long stretch from Marine Drive to Worli in south Bombay.
The Mumbai coastal road project comes at a hefty price tag of INR 12,721 crores, but it’s a price worth paying for the benefits it will bring to Mumbai’s infrastructure.
This significant investment is expected to give a significant boost to the city’s transportation system and improve the lives of its citizens.
The Mumbai coastal road project is progressing well, with 71% of the work completed so far. Tunnel boring work is almost finished at 91%, while reclamation and retaining wall work are at 93% and 79%, respectively. Interchanges and bridges are at 36% and 32%, respectively.
Overall, progress is steady and promising, which is why the first phase of the project is expected to open soon.
Imagine being able to travel from Marine Lines in south Mumbai to Kandivali in north Mumbai in nearly half the time it would typically take. That’s precisely what the upcoming Mumbai coastal road project promises to deliver.
This ambitious initiative is anticipated to cut down travel time between these two locations by a staggering 70 percent. But that’s not all. The project is also expected to reduce fuel consumption by 34 percent, making it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transportation options. These benefits are significant and are expected to have a positive impact on the lives of people living and working in Mumbai.
The project began in October 2018, and the total reclaimed area is 111 hectares. The construction of the coastal road has involved several components, including tunnel boring work, reclamation, retaining walls, interchanges, and bridges. These components have all been designed to ensure that the road is safe and reliable for use by the public.
