The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has initiated the tender process to procure 2,856 Vande Metro coaches, marking a significant transformation in Mumbai’s suburban rail network. These state-of-the-art coaches will replace the traditional Mumbai local trains, as announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Inspired by the success of the semi high-speed Vande Bharat trains on long-distance routes, the introduction of Vande Metro aims to elevate the commuter experience within the bustling city.
In a remarkable display of commitment to providing world-class transportation facilities, the MRVC has emphasized stringent maintenance requirements for the Vande Metro coaches, spanning an impressive 35-year period. This long-term vision ensures that the new trains will continue to operate at optimal efficiency, catering to the needs of Mumbai’s growing population. The MRVC has invited interested parties to submit their tenders by September 29, enabling a careful selection process to ensure the highest quality coaches for the city’s commuters.
To facilitate seamless operations and maintenance, two maintenance depots will be established at Vangaon (Western Railway) and Bhivpuri (Central Railway). These depots will serve as key hubs for the upkeep and servicing of the Vande Metro trains. By strategically locating the maintenance facilities, the MRVC aims to minimize downtime and ensure uninterrupted service, providing commuters with a reliable and efficient transportation system.
The Vande Metro trains will be equipped with a range of modern features to enhance passenger convenience and comfort. An automatic door-closing system will improve safety and efficiency during boarding and alighting. Fully-vestibuled coaches will provide a seamless and spacious travel experience for commuters. Infotainment systems featuring large digital display panels will offer real-time information, including dynamic route maps, clear indications of enroute stations and destinations, real-time clocks, and door opening sides. Additionally, digital destination boards located on both sides of each train carriage, as well as at the front and rear, will ensure clear visibility of travel information for passengers.
Recognizing the diverse needs of commuters, the Vande Metro trains will feature dedicated luggage compartments at both ends. These compartments will be thoughtfully designed and segregated from the AC air circulation vents, ensuring that odors from items like fish do not cause inconvenience to passengers in other coaches. By providing dedicated spaces for luggage, the Vande Metro trains aim to streamline the boarding process and enhance the overall travel experience for those carrying bags or suitcases.
The decision to replace Mumbai’s local trains with Vande Metro coaches underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the suburban rail network and providing world-class transportation facilities to commuters. The introduction of these state-of-the-art trains, coupled with stringent maintenance requirements and enhanced passenger features, will undoubtedly elevate the suburban travel experience. As Mumbai prepares for this transformative change, the city’s commuters can look forward to a future of efficient, comfortable, and reliable transportation within the bustling metropolis.
