Wait finally comes to an end! The long-awaited Coastal Road in Kharghar is now set to break ground. It will connect the Jalmarg Sector 16 in Kharghar with Belapur and Nerul, saving travel time for thousands of its residents and visitors. J Kumar Infraprojects wins the bid of ₹1,020.7 crore – the lowest of the three bids made for this tender.
A Great Leap Forward to Better Connectivity
The new road is 9.6 kilometers long and will ease the lives of people in Kharghar and Panvel. It will provide a direct route to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) via an interchange on the Sion-Panvel Highway. CIDCO is set to complete the project in 30 months, including the delay during the monsoon season.
What to Expect from the Project
The road will extend from Jalmarg Sector 16 to the Kharghar Railway Station and run along the Panvel Creek initially. Its future plans suggest its extension will head towards the Passenger Water Terminal at Nerul and Belapur. Approximately, 3 kilometres of the total length will share the existing road while the balance length will rest on stilts or reclaimed earth. The construction received environmental approval in August of 2024 to pave easy smooth progress of work.
Timeline for Construction
The total duration of the whole project is expected to be 913 days. The project will begin with designing and approvals within the first 90 days while leaving the remaining to construction. The road will pass through key areas, such as the Sion-Panvel Expressway, Kharghar, Belapur, and Nerul, and will finally connect the Panvel City Road near Delhi Public School to Palm Beach Marg.
Game Changer for Navi Mumbai
According to a CIDCO official, it will enhance considerably the connectivity among NMIA, Nerul Water Terminal, and Kharghar. It also supports the construction of the International Corporate Park within the area and is likely to be as vibrant as the business hub at the Bandra Kurla Complex. Further, the new road will reduce further traffic congestion in the Sion-Panvel Highway.
Other Developments
Besides the Kharghar Coastal Road, work on the Ulwe Coastal Road has already started. This 5.8-kilometer elevated road will connect NMIA to Atal Setu, making it easy for vehicles from Mumbai to reach the airport quickly.
