Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated two new corridors on Thursday, providing a “signal-free” commute from Mumbai to Thane and Thane to Navi Mumbai, easing traffic and reducing pollution in eastern Mumbai.
These projects will help decongest traffic in the eastern suburbs and provide quick connectivity between the Eastern and Western express highways.
A 1.25 km flyover from Mankhurd to Thane was inaugurated on Thursday, providing a signal-free commute between Thane and Navi Mumbai.
The flyover criss-crosses above the Chheda Nagar junction and was built at a cost of Rs 94 crore. It is expected to ease traffic from Amar Mahal to Mankhurd and Thane.
The Kurla-Vakola elevated corridor of the SCLR Phase I, spanning 3.03 km, is now open to traffic, easing the traffic congestion in the area and benefiting the corporate establishments located there.
The Eastern Freeway and SCLR had caused traffic snarls at Chheda Nagar Junction in Ghatkopar.
The MMRDA is constructing three flyovers and one subway to ease the situation, and the flyover linking the SCLR has been opened, expected to provide significant relief at the CST road-BKC junction.
The ongoing SCLR extension project with a budget of Rs 415 crore is yet to be completed.
The plan includes three flyovers at Chheda Nagar.
One flyover already opened in March 2022, connecting the existing North-South Chheda Nagar flyover to the Amar Mahal flyover.
The remaining 600-meter-long South-North flyover at Chheda Nagar is expected to open in December.
The SCLR extension is also expected to be taken above the Western Express Highway and extend up to Vakola junction by December 2023.
