Tragedy Strikes in Kurla as Compound Wall Collapse Claims Life of 18-Year-Old Girl

In Kurla (West), behind Bharat Talkies, at 8:00 p.m., “a compound wall of a house collapsed on the adjacent Chawl,” according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

“An 18-year-old girl was killed after a compound wall of a ground plus two-storey structure fell on floors of a chawl under it in the city’s Subhash Nagar, close to Shiv Mandir, behind Bharat Talkies in Kurla (West)” an official said.

“Around 8 o’clock in the evening, the Mumbai police notified the event to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster control room. The incident took place in the Subhash Nagar neighbourhood of Kurla”, a BMC official stated.

The girl has been identified as Vaishnavi Prajapati. She was first sent to Bhabha hospital in Kurla after suffering injuries to the head whereupon she eventually passed away and was confirmed dead.

“Vaishnavi was living with eight more members of her family. The other family member’s presence in the room at the time the incident occurred has not been determined yet, according to the BMC official.

“The compound wall of the Jain Sadan, a ground-plus-two-story building that is situated on an incline in a hillside, crumbled and fell on two rooms of chawl-like tenements that are placed below the Jain Sadan. The girl who was in one of the rooms was seriously hurt when the wall that was over the AC sheet roof collapsed. The tenant of the other room somehow managed to escape without getting hurt. Injured Vaishnavi Prajapati was transported right away to Bhabha Hospital, where she was pronounced dead”, the official added.

The society had a perimeter barrier because it was situated on a hill. The 2-foot wall collapsed with its base and crashed on the slum next to the constructed wall.

“As a precaution, we have advised the inhabitants of the five rooms and including the two rooms located beneath the ground plus two storey building to leave. Although no injuries were recorded, some close residents had complaints that a few stones got on them as well. The ground and a two-story building are both unharmed. However, we will be returning to the area in the morning to conduct another inspection before determining the best course of conduct”, an official stated.

“We have filed an accidental death report (ADR) and are looking into the matter. When the old wall collapsed onto Prajapati’s home, nobody else was there”, according to a police officer from Kurla police station.

An investigation and more information from this tragic incident are underway.
