Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has announced the induction of 20 air-conditioned (AC) electric double-decker buses before the end of March as part of its clean and green mobility initiative.
The newly acquired e-buses have arrived in Mumbai but will be registered at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) before hitting the road for the public.
Officials estimate that more AC double-decker e-buses will be added to the fleet by the end of March, with plans to introduce 200 such buses by the year-end.
These eco-friendly buses are part of BEST’s clean and green mobility initiative and are set to hit the city’s roads by the end of March.
Route and Facilities
The first AC double-decker e-bus will operate from the Kurla bus depot on the Kurla-Santacruz route.
BEST has decided to deploy the buses on other busy city routes such as the Colaba depot, Majas depot, and Kurla depot, which have a high footfall during office hours.
The AC double-decker e-bus has the capacity to carry 78 commuters and comes equipped with doors on both sides for easy passenger movement.
A digital tap-in tap-out ticketing service is available for passenger convenience, while CCTV cameras ensure passenger safety.
Fares
The minimum fare for the AC double-decker e-bus is ₹ 6, making it an affordable and sustainable mode of transportation for the citizens of Mumbai.
Benefits
Introducing these electric buses is a significant step towards reducing BEST’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation in the city.
The 200 e-buses introduced by BEST this year will save approximately 26 million litres of diesel per year, further contributing to the city’s clean and green initiative.
Future Plans
BEST plans to introduce approximately 4,000 e-buses, including around 200 AC double-decker e-buses, in the city by the financial year 2023-24.
This move will not only reduce the carbon footprint of public transportation but will also provide a comfortable and eco-friendly mode of travel for the citizens of Mumbai.
Introducing AC double-decker electric buses in Mumbai is a step towards creating a cleaner and greener city.
The ease of travel, along with the reduced carbon footprint and diesel consumption, makes this an excellent initiative for the future of public transportation in Mumbai.
With more such eco-friendly transportation options in the future, Mumbai can become a model city for sustainable urban living.
