The Mumbai Metro is the fastest-growing way to cross the city: air-conditioned trains that skip the traffic on the Western Express Highway, Link Road, Andheri–Kurla Road and the old roads of south Mumbai. All Mumbai Metro lines at a glance

Mumbai Metro lines are numbered and colour-coded. Several numbers share a colour because they form one long corridor built in stages — Lines 2A and 2B are both Yellow, Lines 7, 7A and 9 are Red, and Lines 4, 4A, 10 and 11 are Green. Tap any line below to see its stations, timings and fares.

Who builds and runs the metro

Most lines are planned and built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Line 1 is run by Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), the city’s first public–private metro. Lines 2A, 7, 2B and 9 are run by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation (MMMOCL), an MMRDA company. Line 3, the underground Aqua Line, belongs to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL). Navi Mumbai Metro is a separate system built by CIDCO. This matters to you mainly for tickets: each operator has its own app and smart card, although the newer common tickets now work across most of them.

Metro lines running now

Six lines carry passengers today. Four are fully open from end to end, and two — Line 2B and Line 9 — run on their first completed stretch while the rest is built. The coloured strip under each line shows its stations in order; bigger filled dots mark stations where you can change to another metro line or a local train. Mumbai Metro Line 1 (Blue Line): Versova – Andheri – Ghatkopar

Mumbai’s first metro opened in June 2014 and is still its busiest east–west link. It crosses the suburbs from Versova on the western coast to Ghatkopar in the east, replacing a slow, jam-prone road journey with a ride of about 21 minutes. Trains come every few minutes at peak hours.

Line 1 is the glue of the western network. At D.N. Nagar you can walk across to Line 2A, at Western Express Highway (WEH) you change to Line 7, and at Marol Naka you can switch to the underground Line 3 for the airport, BKC or south Mumbai. It also meets the local train network at Andheri (Western line) and Ghatkopar (Central line), so many commuters use it to hop between the two railway lines without going through Dadar.

Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line): Dahisar (East) – Andheri (West)

Line 2A runs north–south above New Link Road through the western suburbs — Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon and Oshiwara — ending at Andheri (West), right next to D.N. Nagar on Line 1. It opened in two stages in 2022 and 2023 and is an easy alternative to the crowded Western line for anyone living west of the railway tracks.

At its northern end, Dahisar (East) is a three-way interchange with Line 7 and Line 9. In future, Lower Oshiwara will connect with Line 6 to Powai and Vikhroli, and the Andheri (West) end will continue as Line 2B to Bandra, BKC and Chembur.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line): Cuffe Parade – BKC – Airport – Aarey JVLR

Line 3 is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro and the only one that reaches the island city. It runs the length of Mumbai from Cuffe Parade and the Fort business district, past Churchgate, CSMT, Mumbai Central, Worli and Dadar, to Bandra Kurla Complex, both airport terminals, the SEEPZ industrial area and Aarey. The full line opened in October 2025, and an end-to-end ride takes a little over an hour.

For visitors it is the most useful line of all: Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 both have stations, so you can reach Churchgate or CSMT without touching the road. Daily commuters use it for the BKC and Worli office districts. It links with the local train network at seven stations and with Line 1 at Marol Naka.

Mumbai Metro Line 7 (Red Line): Dahisar (East) – Gundavali (Andheri East)

Line 7 follows the Western Express Highway on the eastern side of the western suburbs, serving Borivali (East), Kandivali (East), Malad (East), Goregaon (East) and Jogeshwari (East). Rashtriya Udyan station is the closest stop for Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Like Line 2A, it opened in 2022 and has run end to end since January 2023.

At Gundavali you walk to WEH station on Line 1 for Andheri, Marol and Ghatkopar. Line 9 now continues north from Dahisar (East) to Mira Road, and some trains run straight through between Gundavali and Kashigaon. When Line 7A opens, the Red Line will also reach Airport Terminal 2.

Mumbai Metro Line 2B (Yellow Line): open between Mandale and Chembur

Line 2B will eventually continue the Yellow Line from Andheri (West) through Juhu, Bandra, BKC and Kurla to Chembur and Mankhurd. Its eastern end opened first: Mandale to Diamond Garden in April 2026, then on to Chembur in August 2026. This short stretch already gives Mankhurd and Chembur residents a quick metro link, with interchanges to the Harbour line at Chembur and Mankhurd.

The western section through Bandra and BKC is still under construction and is officially targeted for completion by around 2028. When finished, Line 2B will connect with Line 1 and 2A at D.N. Nagar, Line 3 at BKC and Line 4 on the Eastern Express Highway.

Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Red Line): open between Dahisar (East) and Kashigaon

Line 9 extends the Red Line north across the Dahisar river into Mira Road and Bhayandar, an area that until now depended on the overcrowded Western line and the highway. Its first section, from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, opened on 8 April 2026, with direct trains from Gundavali so you can ride from Andheri (East) to Mira Road without changing.

The remaining four stations, ending at Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Bhayandar, are expected around December 2026. Miragaon is planned as the interchange for the future Line 10 to Gaimukh in Thane.

Metro lines opening next

Several lines are close to opening, while others are a few years away. Opening dates in Mumbai have a habit of slipping, so treat the targets below as the latest official estimates rather than firm promises. We update this page as each section is cleared by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) and opens to the public.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 and 4A (Green Line): Thane to Wadala

Line 4 is the metro Thane has been waiting for. The 32.3 km elevated line will run along the Eastern Express Highway from Kasarvadavali on Ghodbunder Road through Thane, Mulund, Bhandup, Vikhroli and Ghatkopar to Wadala, with Line 4A adding two stations up to Gaimukh. The first 10.5 km between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction has finished its trial runs and testing, and MMRDA is waiting for final safety approvals before opening it — the latest official target is December 2026. The remaining section into Mumbai is expected to follow by around 2028.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A (Red Line): Gundavali to Airport Terminal 2

Line 7A is a short 3.4 km airport link that will carry Red Line trains from Gundavali to Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, partly on a viaduct and partly in tunnel. The tunnels are complete, but the elevated part near the airport has needed extra height clearances, so no firm date has been given; 2027 is the current expectation. Once open, it will give the western suburbs a direct ride to the airport and a second interchange with Line 3 at Terminal 2.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line): Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan

Line 5 will connect Thane with the warehouse town of Bhiwandi and, in a later phase, Kalyan. Phase 1 starts at Kapurbawdi, where it meets Line 4, and runs 7 stations to Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi; it is largely complete and targeted for around December 2026. A revised route approved in 2026 extends the corridor towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar over the following years.

Mumbai Metro Line 6 (Pink Line): Lokhandwala – JVLR – Vikhroli

Line 6 is the second big east–west link after Line 1. It will run 15.3 km along the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road from Swami Samarth Nagar near Lokhandwala to Vikhroli, passing Jogeshwari, SEEPZ, Powai and the Kanjurmarg area. It meets Line 2A at Lower Oshiwara, Line 7 at Jogeshwari (East), Line 3 at Aarey JVLR and Line 4 at Vikhroli, so it will tie four corridors together. Construction is well advanced, and the first sections are expected to open in stages from 2027.

Future Mumbai Metro lines

Beyond the lines above, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s metro master plan covers roughly 337 km across 14 numbered lines and their extensions, stretching from Virar in the north to Badlapur and Taloja in the east. These corridors are either under early construction or still at the planning and approval stage.

Line 12 will join Line 5 at Kalyan and the Navi Mumbai Metro near Taloja, while Line 8 would let air travellers move between the city’s two airports by metro. Line 11 would extend the Green Line from Wadala into the heritage district around CSMT.

Mumbai Metro fares and tickets

All Mumbai Metro lines use distance-based fares, and the cheapest ticket on every line is ₹10. Because each line is run separately, you usually pay a separate fare for each line in a journey, although common QR tickets and cards let you do it in one purchase.

Ways to buy a ticket

• Mumbai One app — a single app launched in October 2025 that sells QR tickets for the metro, Mumbai Monorail, suburban trains and several city bus services, with a journey planner built in.
• Operator apps and WhatsApp — each operator also sells QR tickets in its own app, and some lines let you book a QR ticket by WhatsApp chat. Show the QR code at the gate.
• Contactless cards (NCMC) — National Common Mobility Cards, including the operators’ own cards and many bank-issued RuPay cards, can be tapped at the gates. Top up in advance and keep a minimum balance.
• Station counters and machines — paper QR tickets, tokens and card top-ups are available at every station, but expect queues at busy stations in the morning and evening peak.
• Return and multi-trip options — return QR tickets and trip passes are offered on some lines and can work out cheaper for daily travel.

Mumbai Metro timings and frequency

Metro trains generally start between 5:30 and 6:00 AM and the last trains leave between 10:30 and 11:50 PM. Frequencies are highest during the morning and evening rush and drop off late in the evening and on Sundays.

Interchange stations

The metro is most useful when combined with other lines and the suburban railway. These are the stations where you can change without leaving the area — usually by a short walk or a connecting bridge.

Tips for travelling on the Mumbai Metro

• Buy before you reach the gate. Booking a QR ticket in an app while you walk to the station saves the counter queue, especially at Andheri, Ghatkopar and BKC.
• Avoid the worst of the rush. Lines 1 and 3 are packed roughly between 8:30 and 10:30 AM and 6 and 8:30 PM. Travel a little earlier or later if you can.
• Keep luggage manageable. All bags go through a security scanner. Airport travellers with suitcases use Line 3 every day, but very bulky items can be refused on any line.
• Use reserved seats and coaches correctly. Seats are set aside for women, senior citizens and people with disabilities, and some lines mark a coach or section for women.
• Note your exit before you arrive. Large stations have several exits on different sides of a highway or road; signs at the platform tell you which exit leads where.
• Plan the last train. If you are changing lines late at night, check that your second line is still running, as the last trains of each line leave at different times.
• Accessibility. Stations have lifts and escalators, and the newer lines have tactile paths and accessible toilets. Staff at the customer care counter can help with wheelchairs.
• No eating or littering. Food and drink are not allowed on trains, and fines apply for littering, spitting and travelling without a valid ticket.

Navi Mumbai Metro and Mumbai Monorail

Navi Mumbai Metro is a separate network run for CIDCO. Its Line 1 runs 11.1 km from Belapur Terminal through Kharghar to Pendhar near Taloja, with 11 stations, and has been open since November 2023. Fares are ₹10 – ₹30. Extensions towards the new Navi Mumbai International Airport have been approved. Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1: stations, timings and fare.

Mumbai Monorail runs between Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Jacob Circle) via Wadala. Services were suspended in September 2025 for a safety, signalling and fleet upgrade. A restart has been announced several times since, so check the latest news before planning a trip that depends on it.

How many Mumbai Metro lines are running now?

Six lines carry passengers. Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7 are fully open, and Lines 2B (Mandale – Chembur) and 9 (Dahisar East – Kashigaon) are partly open. Together they cover about 92 km and 79 stations.

How many metro lines will Mumbai have?

The metro master plan for the Mumbai region has 14 numbered lines plus extensions such as 2B, 4A and 7A, covering roughly 337 km when complete.

Which metro line goes to Mumbai airport?

Line 3 (Aqua Line) has stations at both Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Line 7A, now under construction, will also link Line 7 to Terminal 2.

What is the minimum and maximum Mumbai Metro fare?

The minimum fare on every line is ₹10. The highest single-line fare is about ₹70, for the full length of Line 3. Line 1 tops out at ₹40.

What are the Mumbai Metro timings?

Most lines run from about 5:30 – 6:00 AM until 10:30 – 11:50 PM. Line 1 has the latest last train, at around 11:50 PM.

Can I use one ticket for all Mumbai Metro lines?

Yes. The Mumbai One app sells QR tickets that work across the metro lines, monorail, suburban trains and several bus services, and NCMC contactless cards are accepted on most lines.

Is there a metro to Thane?

Not yet. Line 4 and 4A will be the first metro in Thane; the Gaimukh – Cadbury Junction stretch is expected to open around the end of 2026, with the full line to Wadala by about 2028.

Which metro line goes to south Mumbai?

Line 3 (Aqua Line) is the only metro in south Mumbai. It runs underground to Churchgate, CSMT, Mumbai Central, Grant Road and Cuffe Parade.

Where can I change between metro lines?

The main interchanges are Dahisar (East) for Lines 2A, 7 and 9; D.N. Nagar/Andheri (West) for Lines 1 and 2A; WEH/Gundavali for Lines 1 and 7; and Marol Naka for Lines 1 and 3.

Does the metro connect with local trains?

Yes. Line 1 meets the Western line at Andheri and the Central line at Ghatkopar; Line 3 meets local trains at Churchgate, CSMT, Dadar, Mumbai Central and other stations; Line 2B meets the Harbour line at Chembur and Mankhurd.

Is the Mumbai Metro underground?

Only Line 3 (Aqua Line) is fully underground. Most other lines are elevated, and Line 7A will be partly underground near the airport.

Is Navi Mumbai Metro part of the Mumbai Metro?

No. Navi Mumbai Metro is a separate system run for CIDCO, with its own fares and tickets. Its Line 1 runs from Belapur to Pendhar.
